BSC Receives Workforce
Development Initiative Grant

West Virginia Governor Cecil Underwood recently announced that the Bluefield State College Community & Technical College has been awarded $50,400 through the Workforce Development Initiative program. The grant award will be used to support a Pre-Employment Training Program geared toward manufacturing, and accelerated Cisco Networking Training Program--both of which are coordinated through BSC's Center for Economic Enhancement.

The West Virginia Legislature set aside $750,000 for Workforce Development Initiative grants, to be awarded over a period of five years. The West Virginia Council for Community and Economic Development administers the grants through a competitive process that includes a project proposal.

"To remain competitive, we must invest in workforce development programs that promote growth in West Virginia's businesses and industries," noted Don T. Rigby, chairman of the West Virginia Council for Community and Economic Development. "By allowing our community colleges to respond to the specific needs of businesses and industries, these grants will maximize West Virginia's workforce development resources."

The award to Bluefield State will be used to support a Pre-Employment Training Program that currently addresses the hiring demands of three southern West Virginia manufacturers--Custom Manufacturing Services in Princeton, Flowers Baking Products of WV in Bluefield, and Superior Manufacturing in Beckley. The 120-hour training program will further advance the manufacturing industry in southern West Virginia by developing and promoting a collaborative training system that produces a high quality, safety-conscious, eager, just-in-time workforce. Other initial partners of the College in this training program include RESA-1 in Beckley, and 4C Development Authority in Oak Hill.

The award will also support an Accelerated Cisco Networking Training program to prepare employees of industrial participants to sit for the Certified Cisco Networking Associate (CCNA) examination. Initial participants in this program include First Century Bank, Turner Vision, Pocahontas Land Corporation, and Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
