More than 50 area public school students from 11 area school teams participated in the recent regional MATHCOUNTS program, coordinated by the Southeast Chapter of the West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers, at Bluefield State College. BSC and the Bowen Foundation collaborated in holding the competition.

MATHCOUNTS regional director Roy Pruett, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at BSC, notes the competition promotes excellence in mathematics among public school students. "It's interesting to note that a significant number of the most valued companies listed in the stock market are those companies that are primarily involved in technology," he told students at the awards ceremony at BSC. "Skill in mathematics is essential for success in a career that is based in technology."

Bluefield Middle School won first place in the team competition, with Princeton Middle School taking second place. Shady Spring Middle School finished third. Participating teams came from schools in Mercer, McDowell, and Raleigh Counties.

The top six individual finishers were Lucas Stone (Bluefield), Maya Rao (Bluefield), Greg Michaelson (Bluefield), Nicholas Tankersley (Shady Spring), Kendra Harman (Princeton), and Josh Hendrix (Bluefield).
