"Annually, I prepare an annual Historically Black College and University (HBCU) research report, and I noted that NASA had not awarded any research grants during the previous year for West Virginia's Historically Black colleges," he noted. "I visited Bluefield State College and West Virginia State College to explore the opportunities for involving both institutions in research projects underwritten by NASA grants."
Person said a demonstrated need exists for developing the math, science, and engineering skills of young adults entering the work force, and he believes BSC has the potential to address this concern.
"A significant goal within our umbrella of research involves encouraging more underrepresented minorities to enter the work force, particularly in fields dependent upon engineering, computer science, and math," he stated. "Ideally, these students would then become active in recruiting other minorities to enter these 'high opportunity' professions."
NASA-sponsored research programs undergird the organization's mission "to advance and communicate scientific knowledge and understanding of the Earth, the solar system, and the universe." In pursuit if its goals, NASA funds thousands of proposals each year to study the natural phenomena of the Earth and the cosmos, life sciences, materials sciences, and advanced technologies that have application for aeronautic and space transportation systems. NASA carries out its research activities by soliciting proposals through a variety of announcements. Awards through various solicitations fund thousands of research projects.
