Hosted a site visit by a team of educators from the Higher Learning Commission (North Central Association) in conjunction with BSC's effort to receive continuing national accreditation
Bluefield State College celebrated "African-American Heritage Month, with six major events and a variety of exhibits and displays at the College.
Throughout the month, the public was invited to view an African-American Music Display and a "Heritage of Black American Nurses' Exhibit." Additionally, profiles of prominent BSC alumni, researched and written by members of the College's African-American Heritage Month planning committee, were published in the local newspaper.
The Student Accounting Society of Bluefield State College continued to provide free income tax preparation assistance to low income and elderly individuals through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, co-sponsored with the Internal Revenue Service. Last year, BSC accounting students and accounting faculty gave 450 volunteer hours, assisting area residents in the completion of 412 income tax returns.
An article detailing research results conducted by Dr. Donald W. Caudill, Professor of Marketing at Bluefield State College, Dr. James Littlefield, Professor of Marketing at Virginia Tech, and E. Thomas Garman, Distinguished Scholar/In-Charge Institute of America, was published in a recent edition of Services Marketing Quarterly, a peer-reviewed, refereed, professional/scholarly journal read by academicians, business officials, and other researchers.
Dr. Michael Smith, BSC Professor of English, was notified that his soon-to-be-released book, Fishing the New River Valley: An Angler's Guide, will be released in mid-March, 2002. Dr. Smith will speak at the "Virginia Festival of the Book," in Charlottesville, VA on March 20.
Shelia Hallman-Warner, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at BSC, recently attended the 17th Annual Conference of the International Association of Correctional Training Personnel (IACTP) in Delray Beach, Florida. She conducted a presentation on "Utilizing Colleges and Universities as a Correctional Resource". Hallman-Warner also serves on the Board of Directors of IACTP, representing Higher Education.
More than 300 adult students registered for the March, 2002 tuition-free Emerging Scholars Adult Program at Bluefield State College, an enrollment level that doubles the institution's goal for the program. Underwritten by a $100,000 Community & Technical College Development grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the Emerging Scholars Adult program is a "cousin of the highly successful Emerging Scholar Program, conducted during the past three summers at BSC. Students are able to maintain their daytime jobs, while attending classes two nights a week, with the potential of earning six hours' college credit while they receive academic support in enhancing their math, reading, and writing skills.
A scholarly article, researched and written by Bluefield State College student James Thomas Knight, has been published in "International Social Science Review," the official journal of the international Social Science honorary organization, Pi Gamma Mu.
Telecast throughout Bluefield-area cable system two Bluefield City Board of Directors' meetings and the monthly Mercer County Board of Education meeting in December.
Five scholarships were awarded by the Scholarship Committee to deserving students for the Spring Semester. A "Salute to the Committee" will be published in the March, 2002 issue of the "Blue & Gold."
Alumni Association members were pleased to meet with Dr. Thomas Flickema, chairman of the Higher Learning Commission/NCA institutional accreditation site visit team, and site visit team members on February 11, 2002. BSC Alumni Association, Inc. President Ruth Payne Brown appreciated the opportunity afforded to the Association by the HLC site visit team. Alumni participants included President Brown, Vivian Baumgardner, Irma Cabiness, Sue Guyton, Virginia Hebert, Ora Johnson, Doris J. Payne, and Ergie Smith.
Doris J. Payne, chairperson/Hatter Hall Advisory Council, continued to work toward the celebration of the opening of Hatter Hall in October, 2002. She attended a bidding session on February 20, 2002, with Shelia Johnson, BSC Vice President for Financial & Administrative Affairs, and contractors interested in working on the restoration of the Alumni House.
Executive Board members expressed appreciation to President Brown for the monthly communications they receive. February, 2002 communication/mailings to the Executive Board included a report regarding the latest student housing update, delivered at the January, 2002 Institutional Board of Governors' meeting. President Brown stated that the interest generated regarding student housing is encouraging and motivating for her. She stated that, "When you reach for the stars, you may not quite get one, but you won't come up with a handful of mud, either. Student housing will be returned to Bluefield State College."

Participated in meetings (Beckley, Saulsville, Lewisburg, and Princeton, WV) sponsored by the Region I Work Force Investment Board, for the purpose of releasing preliminary results of a region-wide training needs assessment
Completed training for two students, one of whom was from Lockheed Martin (CA), in certified GE Fanuc computer numeric-controlled machining basics. This program was taught at the Greenbrier Community College Center (GCCC) of BSC, in partnership with the Monroe County Manufacturing Assistance Center.
Initiated a Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) training program for 13 students, including employees of Snowshoe Resort, The Greenbrier, ABB Automation, Lear Corporation, MeadWestvaco, the General Lewis Inn, BUTA, and the Goodrich Corporation
Started a 90-hour Pre-Licensing Real Estate course at GCCC, with 20 students participating
Hosted a "Lean Manufacturing" program at GCCC. The program was co-sponsored by the WV Manufacturers Association and the Goodrich Corporation
