Celebration and Vigil
Planned by BSC, January 21

(BLUEFIELD)–A celebration and candlelight vigil commemorating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., planned by Bluefield State College students and staff, will take place, January 21.

A committee comprised of BSC employees and students and chaired by the College's interim Vice President for Student Affairs, Kathy Epperly, has announced details of the program. "At 6 p.m., on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge, Dr. Garry Moore (pastor of Scott Street Baptist Church) will speak, after which a candlelight walk and motor route will take participants to BSC's Hebert Gallery," Epperly noted. "At Hebert Gallery, a program featuring local pastor Todd French and area singers will be presented." Refreshments will be served after the program. "The event is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend," Epperly added.

Jackie Bratton, BSC Student Activities Assistant, and Bettie Wallace, BSC Alumni Affairs Administrative Secretary Senior, are working with area churches wishing to take part in the program. "Some transportation will be available for individuals who would prefer to ride from the bridge to Hebert Gallery, "Bratton said. Additionally, Joan Buchanan, Student Activities Coordinator, is contacting area schools to promote participation in the program, and area colleges have also been notified.

"Dr. Martin Luther King was an outstanding advocate for human rights," Bratton said. "This program provides an opportunity to pay tribute to him. He has done so much for so many."

"It is very important that we remember the contributions Dr. King made to the civil rights movement," Epperly added. "The program and vigil are reminders of all he has done, and this event has been organized to commemorate his life and all he stood for."
