BSC Faculty Member to Attend FEMA
"Flood Mitigation Design" Institute

(BLUEFIELD)–Bruce Mutter, associate professor of architectural engineering technology at Bluefield State College, will participate in a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Summer Institute that addresses strategies to reduce the threat in flood-prone areas. The :Flood Mitigation Design Institute" is included in the 28th annual "Multi-Hazard Building Design Summer Institute sponsored by the FEMA Emergency Management Institute, July 22-26, 2002, in Emmitsburg, MD.

"By participating in the coursework offered through the FEMA headquarters' program, I hope to gain knowledge and insight into flood mitigation," Mutter noted. "Training of this type can lay the groundwork for future initiatives in emergency management." Information gained from recent natural disasters has been applied to the course, which reflects the latest edition of the International Code Series, engineering (ASCE) standards, FEMA publications, and changes to the National Flood Insurance program.

Mutter directs the Applied Research & Technology Center at BSC. The Center works within the College's Research & Development Corporation, which is involved in grant writing initiatives related to several research projects involving emergency management.
