More than 300 adult students continued their participation in the tuition-free Emerging Scholars Adult Program at Bluefield State College, an enrollment level that more than doubled the institution's goal for the program. Underwritten by a $100,000 Community & Technical College Development grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the Emerging Scholars Adult program permitted students to maintain their daytime jobs, while attending classes two nights a week, with the potential of earning six hours' college credit while they received academic support in enhancing their math, reading, and writing skills.

The College initiated its Summer Emerging Scholars Program, with more than 150 students enrolled at BSC sites throughout southeastern West Virginia

The BSC student chapter of Habitat for Humanity continued site preparation and construction work for a residence that will be presented to a disadvantaged family later this summer

Two engineering technology students are gathering data and producing CADD-generated drawings of all BSC buildings. Their work is being included in the College's space utilization study.

The National Youth Sports Program summer camp for disadvantaged area youth, ages 10-16, began its fourth season at Bluefield State College, June 15 with approximately 160 participants. The five-week program, which is offered free-of-charge to qualifying students, provides youthful participants with opportunities to receive instruction in swimming, tennis, basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, cooperative games, math & science, and drug/alcohol education.
Partnership Activities
- The BSC Presidential Search Committee continued its work in receiving and considering applicants for the presidency of the institution.

Telecast throughout Bluefield-area cable system two Bluefield City Board of Directors' meetings and the monthly Mercer County Board of Education meeting in December

A reception honoring former BSC President Dr. Robert Moore, who resigned as president on June 30, was held on June 30. The function drew an audience of students, faculty, staff, community leaders, and regional higher education leaders.
BSC Alumni Association, Inc. (BSCAA) June 2002 Activities
- Plans and preparations proceeded in advance of the BSC Alumni Association, Inc. national reunion, July 18-20 in Cincinnati. Preparation for the Chapter Queens Contest. Funds raised for this event are used to provide educational opportunities through the BSCAA, Inc. Scholarship Program.
- Doris Payne, Chairperson of the Hatter Hall Advisory Council, met on June 22 with BSC administrators and contractors involved in the Hatter Hall renovation and restoration project. Plans are being developed for an Open House at Hatter Hall on October 5, 2002 at 10 a.m.
- Major committees that met during the month for evaluation and planning for upcoming sessions included the following:
a) The Scholarship Committee, chaired by Lola Harris, met on June 19.
Nine new scholarship applications were received, along with two
continuing scholarship applications;
b) The Finance Committee held its first of three meetings during the
summer in Bluefield;
c) The Financial Secretary and Nominating Committee are planning for
the upcoming Association election, and;
d) The Hatter Hall Advisory Council is continuing its fund-raising drive to
reach its $100,000 matching grant goal. BSC Interim President Dr.
Thomas Blevins pledged an additional $500 to complete a $1,000
donation.
- BSCAA, Inc. President Ruth Payne Brown represented the Association during several activities in June, including two receptions honoring Dr. Robert Moore. Ms. Brown, on behalf of the BSCAA, Inc., presented to Dr. Moore and the College a $5,000 donation for the recruitment of minority students. One dozen red roses were presented to Mrs. Pat Moore for her nine years as "First Lady" of Bluefield State College. Other Executive Board members in attendance were Mrs. Virginia Hebert and Ms. Doris Payne.
- President Brown took part in a two-day meeting of the BSC Board of Governors, June 26-27 in Charleston, for the purpose of receiving training that would assist in the search for a new president for the College. "The process of hiring a new president for Bluefield State College is both educational and exciting," she noted. "I sincerely hope that the ‘changing of the guard' is so smooth that we continue to
work together to make a difference. I am glad to be an integral part of this period in the history of Bluefield State College."
BSC Center for Economic Enhancement Activities
Continuing customized Microsoft Office training program for employees of First Century Bank (Bluefield, WV). In addition to training for Bluefield employees of the bank, courses have been started at bank branch locations in Hinton, WV and Oceana, WV, using a mobile training strategy consisting of laptop computers and wireless network access points.

Began teaching two customized "Introduction to Electricity" courses, as part of an Industrial Maintenance certificate program for Bluefield Beverage Co. (Bluefield, VA). Also completed development of customized assessments for the maintenance department to utilizing in hiring and other personnel decisions.
Completed "Semester 7" of Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP) training program geared toward working adults and employees of business and industry. Students must have already successfully completed the Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) examination before beginning this accelerated program. Employees of Pocahontas Land Corporation (Bluefield, WV) are participating in the training. "Semester 8" of this program will begin in August.
Hosted two in-service training sessions for employees of Bluefield Regional Medical Center (Bluefield, WV).
Completed the first session of "Kids Kollege," with 19 students (grades 1-6) participating. Courses included "Math Made Funtastic," "Solar System Secrets," "Hands-On Rocketry," and "Postcards from Pompeii." More than 40 students are enrolled for the second session, July 22-26.
