Mr. Samuel Moore (BSC Class of 1977) delivered Saturday's Commencement Address. Moore, a former Bluefield, VA resident and winner of the prestigious national Milken Award for teaching excellence, noted "The privilege of returning to one's alma mater to speak at commencement is a once in a lifetime honor, and I am grateful for this opportunity."
He encouraged the graduates to dream big dreams. "Success is made possible most often by dreaming," he told the 2002 graduates. "Also, if you want your dreams to come true, don't oversleep."
Moore reminded the graduates to "leave unique fingerprints. Be sure your fingerprint is left on something worthwhile," he added. In conclusion, he noted, "Think about pay day. Your parents and spouses have made sacrifices to help you obtain a college education. Now, your pay day will come from your decision to do as well as you can with what you have, and commit yourselves to helping others."
Debra Fox, from Ronceverte, WV, who received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Teacher Education, was recognized as BSC's 2002 valedictorian (4.0 GPA) and Susan R. Blankenship, from Beckley, WV, who received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (3.91 GPA) was named salutatorian of the 2002 graduating class.
Roger Owensby, Jr., Assistant Professor and Department Head/Mining Engineering Technology, received the "BSC Foundation Outstanding Faculty Award." He has served on numerous committees, assisted students, interacted with area business and industry, and co- chaired the BSC Accreditation Self-Study committee.
Twelve returning members of the BSC class of 1952 were honored upon the 50th anniversary of their graduation from the College during Saturday's Commencement Exercises. BSC Alumni Association President Ruth Payne Brown, who brought greetings from the Alumni Association, also extended special recognition to the "Class of '52."
