Mr. James L. Skidmore, Vice Chancellor for Community & Technical College Education and Workforce Development/Higher Education Policy Commission of West Virginia, delivered the commencement address. In his remarks, he saluted BSC President Dr. Robert Moore, who will return to the College faculty this fall. "Dr. Moore has been an outstanding president, and he has Bluefield State well prepared to take advantage of the opportunities in the new century," he noted.
Skidmore encouraged students, saying, "You are important to West Virginia. As college graduates, you will make a positive difference." He also encouraged students to be ambassadors, encouraging others within their family and circle of friends to pursue their college degrees. Finally, he advised the BSC Associate Degree graduating class to make education a process. "My hope is that you continue your education, and that tonight's achievements are just a beginning," he concluded.
BSC President Dr. Robert Moore extended congratulations to the graduates, their families, and friends. He told the graduates, "We are confident that the contributions you will make to your region, society, and to those around you will enhance the lives of those you touch."
Norris Kantor (chair of the BSC Board of Governors), Ruth Payne Brown (president of the BSC Alumni Association, Inc.), John White (chair of the BSC Faculty senate), and Phil Lafferty (Student Government Association president), also saluted the 2002 Associate Degree graduating class.
The Baccalaureate portion of BSC's Commencement Exercises will take place at 10 a.m. today (May 11) at the Ned Shott Gym. Altogether, 267 students will receive degrees during the 2002 commencement exercises at the college. The graduates of BSC's Class of 2002 join the ranks of BSC alumni, now numbering 15,955.
Mr. Samuel Moore, BSC Class of 1977, will deliver the Baccalaureate Commencement Address. Moore, formerly from Bluefield, VA, was recently selected as one of only two West Virginia teachers to win the prestigious national Milken Award for teaching excellence.
Members of the BSC class of 1952 will be honored during the Baccalaureate Commencement upon the 50th anniversary of their graduation from the College. The valedictorian and salutatorian of the Class of 2002 will be recognized, and the BSC Foundation Outstanding Faculty Award will be presented, as well.
