Speaking to a capacity audience of nearly 200 in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center, Swindall paused to note, "I have been amazed to see the growth that has taken place at the College." Noting BSC's record enrollment this semester, he praised the College's leadership. "By his comments and actions, (BSC President) Dr. Albert Walker is a man of energy and vision and I am confident he will lead the College successfully into the future," he added.
The former Phoenix, AZ elementary school principal reflected upon his "concern about students at the elementary school, high school, and college level." Swindall detailed five "guideposts to success and failure" that are vitally important to students.
"Students must have initiative," he began. "They must be self-starters. Then they must have ambition. Ambition is the most important guidepost to success." He encouraged students to have perseverance and determination. "Students who succeed have selected a purpose and have resolved to reach goals," he commented. Finally, he stated, "Students must have a passion for knowledge." By using these guideposts for success, all students and particularly those who are at risk, can succeed, he said.
"Dr. Swindall is committed to the cause of education and he's committed to supporting Bluefield State College," observed Dr. Felica Blanks, who introduced the Founders' Day speaker. "He remembers the challenges faced by our students and he has made the commitment to help our students succeed."
The Founders' Day program also featured greetings from Dr. Blanks, Dr.
Walker, Ms. Kathy Epperly (interim Vice President for Student Affairs),
Ms. Ruth Payne Brown (BSC Alumni Association President), and the
Reverend Garry Moore. Music was provided by pianist and BSC graduate
Mrs. Eunice Fleming and flutist and BSC graduate Ms. Dedriell Taylor.
