(BLUEFIELD)–The Student Support Services program at Bluefield State College, has received a $328,737 grant for the 2002-03 fiscal year. The grant award for Student Support Services, a TRIO program at BSC, was presented through the U.S. Department of Education.

This year’s award includes a base amount of approximately $283,000, a previous grant aid recipient award of $3500, a new grant aid recipient award of $36,000, and a technology supplement of $5,000. More than $39,000 through the combined grant aid recipient awards will be presented to 20 freshmen and 20 sophomores. “Each recipient will receive $1000, half in the fall semester and half in the spring to the returning participants,” noted Kathy Epperly, BSC Student Support Services Director.

The remaining funds will be used to underwrite services provided to the 265 students in the program. Services include tutoring, mentoring, academic/career & financial advising, personal counseling, computer lab, a computer laptop loan program, personal computers, calculators, and microcassette recorders.

“Student Support Services provides curricular and support services to income-eligible, disabled, and/or first generation college students,” Epperly explained. Since its inception at BSC more than 30 years ago, SSS has assisted more than 7,000 students.

“The goal of Student Support Services is to help participants to improve their academic performance, retention, and graduation rates by providing highly personalized, comprehensive services,” Epperly said.
