Two BSC Faculty Members
to Attend Nursing Workforce
Diversity Grant Workshop

(BLUEFIELD)–Two Bluefield State College Nursing Division faculty members will participate in a workshop focused upon increasing diversity in the nursing workforce. Dr. Bernadette Dragich, Professor of Nursing, and Ms. Cheryl Winter, Assistant Professor of Nursing, have accepted an invitation from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Office of Minority Health to attend the organization's "Nursing Workforce Diversity Grant Program" workshop, September 18-20 in Silver Spring, MD.

The workshop will provide specialized technical assistance to persons who previously submitted proposals to the program, along with individuals who have demonstrated a genuine interest in pursuing funding. "The assistance provided will be tailored to the specific needs of each proposal to increase its competitiveness for funding," Mia Burnett (HRSA Technical Assistance Center Assistant Manager) explained. "One-on-one mentoring relationships, linking faculty members with persons competent to provide the specialized assistance will be a focal point of the workshop."

Through its Minority Health Institute, BSC has been active in seeking funding to underwrite the cost of programs designed to close a health gap that exists, when comparing the rate of infant mortality, cancer, heart disease, and stroke among African Americans and Whites.

As a function of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' "Closing the Health Gap" initiative, the BSC Title III program, Student Health Center, and Minority Health Institute have become Level One partners for the federal agency's "Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day," September 24, 2002.
