Sexual Assault Resource Team
to Present Program at BSC

(BLUEFIELD)–Shirley Aycoth, Clinical Director of the Mercer County Sexual Assault Resource Team (SART), will present a sexual assault and prevention program at Bluefield State College’s Hebert Gallery, October 23 at 11 a.m.

The program, open to the public free of charge, will focus upon a variety of issues related to sexual assault. “The incidence of sexual assault is much higher than most people think,” Aycoth noted. “Many cases are not reported, and victims can encounter associated health problems--difficulties like eating disorders and depression.”

During her presentation at BSC, Aycoth will discuss safety factors that can reduce the risk of sexual assault. “I think it’s important for students to realize that ‘no’ means ‘NO,’” she continued. Aycoth, who has delivered SART programs to a variety of civic, school, and community organizations, also observed that the average age of a sexual assault victim is 15. In addition to her October 23 program at BSC, Aycoth will speak at the annual Bluefield State College Nursing Conference, October 3.

SART was established approximately two years ago, and was established by the Mercer County Domestic Violence Task Force’s Sexual Assault Task Force. The Task Force was created by the Pam Hawkins Foundation.

“October is ‘Domestic Violence Awareness Month,’” said Dr. Bernadette Dragich, BSC Professor of Nursing and a member of the SART Advisory Board. “Shirley’s message is a timely one and we’re hopeful that the turnout from the College community and the community-at-large will be large.” Refreshments will be served.
