Students from Marlinton Middle School presented a classroom program on Appalachian folk music during one of the final sessions of the Regional and Ethnic Literature classes at Greenbrier Community College Center of Bluefield State College.
Instructor Kim King explained that each student introduced a segment of the regional and ethnic literature by inviting guests who specialize in Appalachian heritage to visit the class as it met in Greenbrier Hall, the main office and classroom building at GCCC.
Amy Sharp, Levi Carr, and Justin Dilley from Marlinton Middle School presented a mini-concert that continued mountain heritage. They were the guests of GCCC student Chris Campbell of Hillsboro and are students in the seventh and eighth grades.
Meanwhile, GCCC student Patricia Parker of Sam Black Church presented a program in muzzle loading riffles. Her guests, Jim King of Maxwelton and Willie Parker of Sam Black Church, dressed in their period costume and discussed the history and the future of muzzle loading gun. King is one of 12 adjunct faculty in the English department who work with Judith Stennent, full time instructor of English at GCCC. In the fall semester, King is slated to be teaching Major British Authors and Grammar for Teachers at GCCC in addition to serving as instructor of English at Eastern Greenbrier Junior High School.
