BSC Vita Program Gives Nearly 500 Volunteer Hours to Income Tax Assistance Project

(BLUEFIELD)--Bluefield State College students and accounting faculty donated 488 hours and provided income tax preparation assistance for 325 area residents during this year's tax season. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at BSC's Bluefield campus provided tax help at the College and at selected sites throughout Mercer County.

The BSC VITA volunteers provided assistance throughout February, March, and April (through the April 15 filing deadline). "Volunteers alerted taxpayers to special credits and deductions, helping them in the preparation of forms, answering questions, and providing additional information," noted William Goodman, BSC Associate Professor of Accounting. "Our students enjoy the satisfaction of helping others, and many people find this service very helpful because it provides a way to complete their returns in a fashion that's comfortable for them." Goodman and William Bradberry, BSC Associate Professor of

Accounting, committed 133 volunteer hours to this year's VITA effort. BSC students involved in the project included Cathy Combs, Kimberly Craft, Etessa Jarrell, Michael Jones, Jennifer Luppold, Keith Meade, April Parks, and Mark Patton. BSC VITA volunteers assisted in completing 260 federal returns and 283 state returns. "These students worked hard and made a great contribution to the College's relations with the community," Goodman observed. "They also put classroom skills to work in a real world' environment."
