Battle of Lewisburg Living History
Set May 23-26 on GCCC Campus

The Living History and Reenactment of the Battle of Lewisburg is scheduled May 23-26 on the campus of Greenbrier Community College Center near downtown Lewisburg and is being sponsored for a second year by the Battle of Lewisburg Heritage Committee along with partner GCCC.

After a highly successful program in 2002, the Committee partnered with GCCC which provides the site for the encampment, the auditorium for the public forums and other facilities for the living history program.

Visitors scheduled to the encampment will include General U.S. Grant, portrayed by Barry Meadows; General Stonewall Jackson, by Stephen Cassle; President Abraham Lincoln, by Jim Rubin; Mary Todd Lincoln, by Joyce Browning, and Robert E. Lee, by A.L. Stone.

These visitors will be among the living history presenters in the Hollowell Auditorium of Greenbrier Hall, the main classroom and office building of GCCC.

Also presenting programs on the Saturday (May 24) of the Reenactment will be Dr. David Perkins, director of GCCC and assistant provost of Bluefield State College, as well as a local history buff, who will speak on "The Civil War in Song." Angela Beavers, assistant director of the event, will speak on "Women's Roles in the Civil War Era."

Other Saturday events will include the Reenactors teaching and playing games from the era; a tea hosted by The General Lewis Inn for the women campers and anyone else in period dress. Mrs. Lincoln will serve as speaker and special guest for the tea. The North House Museum of the Greenbrier Historical Society will display their collection of Civil War letters of Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis. The Museum is temporarily located in The Barracks in downtown Lewisburg, about three blocks from the GCCC campus.

A Camp dance will be held in the evening, with music from the Civil War Era and is open to the public.

Children's events for Saturday include hands on exhibit of Civil War era reproduction artifacts at Carnegie Hall, the game of Who Am I, craft activities, and an historical scavenger hunt. Friday, May 23, though, is children's day when the camp will be open to school groups of all ages with presentations on life as a child in the Civil War, walking tours of the Battle of Lewisburg, reenactors from the White Sulphur Rifles, Beavers and Mrs. Lincoln, and historical dilemma game--should one stay home or join the battle.

Sunday (May 25) events include the inspection of troops, a parade in downtown Lewisburg, the battle reenactment in the streets of Lewisburg and civilian reenactment at the same time as the battle.

The four day event will conclude on Memorial Day (May 26) with a commemoration at the Lewisburg Confederate Cemetery.
