Eight Area Public Schools
to Compete in
Annual "Mathcounts" Competition
at BSC

(BLUEFIELD)–Approximately 50 students from nine area public schools will compete in this year's regional MATHCOUNTS program at Bluefield State College, February 6. The event promotes excellence in mathematics among public school students, and is coordinated by the Southeast Chapter of the West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers. BSC and the Bowen Foundation will collaborate in holding the competition.

This year's teams include Bluefield Middle School, Oakvale School, Glenwood School, Princeton Middle School, Shady Spring Junior High School, Anawalt Elementary School, Sandy River Middle School, Gary Elementary School, and Mount View Middle School.

MATHCOUNTS regional coordinator Roy Pruett, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at BSC, notes that the competition provides both short-term and long- term benefits for the students who participate. "It's significant to note that many of the nation's most valued companies are those that are primarily involved in technology," he said. "Skill in mathematics is essential for success in a career that is based in technology."
