at BSC

(BLUEFIELD)--Bluefield State College has recently been awarded $100,000 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (DHHS) disparity grant program to promote breast cancer awareness and prevention in southern West Virginia.

While the original mission of BSC was to provide students with affordable and geographically accessible opportunities for public higher education, in recent years the College's unique mission emphasizes the development and implementation of collaborative community- based programs that continuously benefit southern West Virginia, and specifically the community in which the College is located.

In furtherance of its mission, Bluefield State College has established the "Minority Health Institute." The unique mission of the Institute is to strengthen and improve access to health care through education, resource development, research, and community mobilization in the Appalachias. The two-year grant from DHHS provides significant support through which the initiatives of the Institute can be advanced.
