Cooperative Program Brings
Internet Courses at GCCC

Through a cooperative program with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, Greenbrier Community College Center of Bluefield State College is now capable of offering a variety of courses and certificate programs new to Southeastern WV and Southwestern VA.

The Internet based courses will include continuing education credit as well as the opportunity to complete certificate programs through the cooperative effort.

"Most programs will require five courses leading to the certificates," Dr. David Perkins, director of GCCC and assistant provost for Bluefield State College, said in announcing the special programs now being offered at GCCC.

Beginning and advanced computers; computer aided design; blueprint reading; Introduction to Computer Aided Drafting; Intermediate Computer Aided Drafting and Blueprint Reading are among the courses being offered.

"Students in these classes must have access to recent versions of AutoCAD software," Perkins notes, adding that the GCCC Computer Labs have these versions and the labs are available 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and some hours during the day on Fridays.

"Each student choose his or her time to take the courses over the special Internet sites," Perkins explains, "It is truly a student setting his own schedule situation and the schedule can vary daily!"

"Some of the students may have the software on the computers at work," Perkins added, noting some of the students in the early phases of this program have done much of their course work in their place of business.

Aimed at the non traditional student working in industry, the Internet programs take advantage of a students working knowledge of computers and drafting, Perkins explains. Communication with the instructor will be via e mail, he adds.
