A second orientation for students attending Greenbrier Community College Center of New River Community and Technical College has been set July 25 after over 100 students and 80 parents attended the first session June 20.
Donna Lewis of the Office of Student Services coordinated the first session which was staffed by GCCC faculty and staff members Celia Moore, Kim King, Suzanne Soucier, Ken Burns, Roger Griffith, Gerry Berry, Judy Stennent, Lizabeth Rogers, and Willis Nordlund.
Assisting from Bluefield State College were John Cardwell, Kenny Mandeville, Don Surbaugh, Tony Dillard, Remona Finney, and Deidi Rose.
Seminars for the orientation were conducted by Carolyn Browning, parents workshop; Ray Mull, academics; Tom Iles, financial aid; Carolyn Kirby, student support services, all from BSC while Michael Palm, student services; Robert Coston, library services; Katie Shafer, GCCC bookstore services; Lynn Evans, security and parking; Robert Davis and Steve Butler, computer services and IVN programs.
The lunch for the nearly 250 presenters, new students; student workers, staff members and BSC staff members was coordinated by Nora Hensley of the Bursers office and Wanda Johnson, program coordinator for student activities and multi cultural activities.
Students assisting with the programs included Kathy Feury, Gap Mills, Pam Cochran, White Sulphur Springs; Erin Ransom, Caldwell; Jim Edwards, Williamsburg; Christy Sofil, Alderson; Jerry Baker, Alderson; Rachel Kelly, Lewisburg; Jossie Ransom, Caldwell; Rebecca Eli, Pickaway, and Carrie Hensley, White Sulphur Springs.
"We have had more compliments on the high quality of students who went through the orientation," notedRoger Griffith, assistant director of GCCC, adding "They may be the best group ever for asking pertinent questions."
Director of Student Services Michael Palm also commented on "the number of sons and daughters of previous GCCC students who attended the first orientation."
"It is always great to see former students who return to GCCC during orientation to introduce second generation students," Palm added.
Greenbrier Community College Center is now a part of the New River Community and Technical College of Bluefield State College and serves the Summers, Greenbrier, Monroe, Pocahontas, and parts of Fayette and Nicholas counties and the Alleghany Highlands of Virginia.
