Nationally Recognized Nursing Educator
Addresses BSC Associate Degree Nursing Faculty

(BLUEFIELD)--With an emphasis upon student learning and retention strategies, nationally recognized nursing educator Donna Ignatavicius directed a professional development activity for the Bluefield State College Associate Degree nursing faculty. Ignatavicius, the author of many nursing textbooks, some of which have been used in the BSC AD nursing program, included workshop segments on clinical evaluation and stimulating students' critical thinking potential to enhance their successful progress in the nursing program.

The activity was supported through the Nursing Student Retention program, which is underwritten by a grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. The session was attended by 16 BSC nursing faculty from the College's Bluefield and Beckley campuses.

Last year, the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Bluefield State College was awarded continuing accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). Additionally, the AD Nursing program has initiated a student retention initiative to increase both the retention rate and the percentage of qualified nursing applicants for the Associate Degree in Nursing Program at BSC. The retention program includes a combination of student tutoring services, development of retention-oriented courses and short programs, caring support and mentoring groups, instructional technology, and faculty development geared toward student retention, designed to help students succeed in their nursing courses and in the nursing profession.
