The Nick J. Rahall II Appalachian Transportation institute is one of 33 University Transportation Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation and includes Bluefield State College among four collaborating institutions. "This seminar will be very useful for engineering educators, civil engineers, surveyors, and transportation professionals," noted Bruce Mutter, Director of the Center for Applied Research & Technology at BSC, and the College's liaison to the Rahall ATI. "The two-day program will focus upon coordinating transportation projects impacting rail traffic."
Upon completion of the seminar, participants will be able to understand the physical and operational characteristics of railroad locomotives/cars and highway vehicles, understand the mission and organization of railroad companies and state highway agencies, understand normal maintenance practices employed by the railroad and state highway department, learn of basic principles for highway traffic control and railroad signaling devices, and identify and establish key communications between the two entities.
The seminar costs $75 per person, which includes lunch, but not lodging.
