Reenacters Invited to Participate
in Battle of Lewisburg
May 23-26

While several organizations of reenacters for both the North and the South have volunteered to participate in the second annual Battle of Lewisburg Reenactment and Living History Weekend May 23-26, individual reenacters are welcome to join in the festivities during any of the four days of activities.

"We welcome all kinds of participation," notes Darlene Fife, chairman of the Reenactment Committee and a downtown Lewisburg merchant. "We have reenacters for both the North and the South as well as the White Sulphur Rifles, but we welcome others as well."

Any reenacter interested can get information on participating by contacting Fife at the Plants Etc., 304-645-6910 or DFIFE@CITYNET.NET. Other information can be obtained from the Greenbrier County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Reenactment and Living History Weekend will be centered around Greenbrier Community College Center and downtown Lewisburg. The camp will be set up on the College Center's lawn on Friday, May 23, with school groups visiting the camp.

"On May 24, we have the other types of Reenacters who are also welcome to volunteer to help with the weekend--the people who "reenact" famous people of the Civil War era," Fife continued, pointing out that already Gen. U.S. Grant; President and Mrs. Lincoln, Gen. Stonewall Jackson and Gen. Robert E. Lee are scheduled to speak in the GCCC's Hollowell Auditorium during that day. A Camp Dance open to the public and a tea with Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln also will take place.

Sunday, May 25, is the actual reenactment and the parade through the historic district of Lewisburg. A memorial service will take place May 26 at the Lewisburg Confederate Cemetery.

"Also encouraged by the planning committee is the wish for people attending the reenactment to be dressed in period costume," Fife says, making note that we hope everyone will come and enjoy the Living History Weekend, but "If they have a period costume, wear it to at least one of the events."

Greenbrier Community College Center of Bluefield State College is the sight for most of the activities of the Living History Weekend with GCCC/BSC serving in partnership with the Battle of Lewisburg Reenactment and Living History Committee.
