BSC Civil Engineering Technology Student Team
Earns Position in
National Championships

(BLUEFIELD)-Recently, during a regional American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student conference held in Virginia Beach, VA, the Bluefield State College Civil Engineering Technology ASCE Student Club earned a spot in the ASCE National Student Steel Bridge Competition National Championships to be held later this month in San Diego, CA. The BSC team outscored student teams from the University of Virginia, VMI, Old Dominion University, West Virginia University, WVU-Institute of Technology, Fairmont State College, and Tokyo Institute of Technology.

The BSC steel bridge team of Justin Harry, Michael Sibold, Jason Thompson, Greg Inman, and Jason Taylor finished second in the Steel Bridge event and first in the Steel Bridge Economy category, nearly outpointing regional event titleist Virginia Tech in the process. The team's bridge was assessed by judges as it supported loads of as much as 1500 pounds during the Virginia's Regional event. In addition, club members Angelia Harmon and Patty Owensby along with the steel bridge team members placed third in Surveying and second in the "Concrete Bowling"competition.

Now, the students are concentrating on refining the design of their 22-foot bridge while they seek to raise the funds necessary to make the trip to San Diego State University on May 23- 25 to compete for a national championship. "We're excited about the opportunity, because our civil engineering technology students have already confirmed that they can compete with student teams from major colleges and universities," noted Kerry Stauffer, BSC ASCE Student Club faculty advisor and a member of the BSC civil engineering technology faculty.

"By participating in the ASCE competitions, our students develop a greater depth of understanding for real world design, and they deal with cost, construction, and aesthetics issues they would encounter in real world design," Stauffer added. "This trip will mark the first time that the BSC ASCE Student Club has ever qualified to compete in the nationals," the BSC faculty member continued. Individuals and organizations interested in providing support to defray expenses for the students' trip are encouraged to contact Stauffer at (304) 327-4124, or by e-mail at: kstauffer@bluefieldstate.edu
