Eighty two candidates for graduation at Bluefield State College have completed all or most of their college work at Greenbrier Community College Center and will be awarded a total of 85 degrees or certificates in graduation exercises at the Bluefield campus on May 16-17.
Honored Saturday, May 10 at the annual GCCC Awards Banquet sponsored by the Student Government Association, the students earned high praise from Dr. David Perkins, director of GCCC and assistant provost of Bluefield State College.
Nearly 200 students, family, faculty and staff members attended the event where Dr. Perkins noted that "We are very proud of the accomplishments which were only dreams a few years ago. You will now go forward, aiming at new dreams and the best wishes of the College go with you."
He then introduced President Albert Walker of Bluefield State College who pointed out that "We have a new Honors Program at Bluefield State College and three of the top students in the program come from Greenbrier Community College." Walker continued to praise "the support by your families, friends to make graduation possible."
Michael Palm, director of Student Services and GCCC sponsor for Phi Eta Sigma, the national academic honorary for two year colleges, introduced the newly inducted members from the GCCC campus. One of the highest activity honor awarded at the Banquet is the Student Government Association Most Valuable Player award which was presented to Pam Cochran of White Sulphur Springs as an example of the hard work, dedication and loyalty to the student body and the SGA. Presenting this award were Judy Stennett, faculty representative to SGA, and Wanda Johnson, program coordinator for Multi Culture activities and sponsor of the SGA.
The Veterans Upward Bound program honored outstanding students and candidates for graduation, including the most outstanding VUB student award to Brian Michelinie, Fairlea. Curtis Pauley, VUB representative at GCCC and the Beckley BSC Center, also recognized successful new VUB students as Michelle Valandingham of White Sulphur Springs; Ken Wygal, White Sulphur Springs; Randy Collins, Union; and Stephen Griffin, Charmco.
Graduates from the program in 2003 include Elizabeth Baker, White Sulphur Springs; James Miller, Lewisburg; Kevin Brooke, Beckley; and Randy Chambers who graduates from Valley Career College, Beckley.
On behalf of the outgoing SGA members, Kathy Feury, president, honored Mrs. Stennett and Mrs. Johnson for their work as sponsors and advisors and also presented checks on behalf of over 1,000 students at GCCC to the Cystic Fibrosis Fund for $406 and to the Greenbrier Community College Foundation Inc. for $600. The funds were raised by various projects of the SGA and the student body.
Palm introduced Michael Hanna who was recently selected to the USA Today All American Academic team and represented Hanna's award as well as recognized Hanna for being elected as the student representative on the Board of Governors of the Bluefield State College New River Technical and Community College.
The director of Student Services also represented various faculty members in presenting department and course of study awards. They included Edwina Mann, White Sulphur Springs, outstanding accounting student; Josie Ramsom, Caldwell, outstanding business management student and Patricia Cooper, Maxwelton, outstanding business administration student.
In the Criminal Justice program, Palm honored Nancy Sarver, Clintonville, outstanding corrections student and Brad Burdette, Elton, as outstanding Law Enforcement student.
Donna Lewis, White Sulphur Springs, and Carolyn Bridgette Evans, Ronceverte, were honored for the Regents Bachelor of Arts degree program.
In honoring the 22 graduates in the Education program who have completed student teaching, Dr. Lucie Refsland, professor of Mathematics, noted that half of these graduates will graduate with honors and that the Education Student of the Year, Karen Poe of Lewisburg, will graduate Summa Cum Laude, symbolic of a 4.0 average. In General Education, Patricia Parker of Smoot was honored as the student of the year.
Lisa Carter, instructor and director of the Hospitality course of study, recognized Kristen McCallister, Alderson, and Brenda Redden, Rainelle, as outstanding students.
Lizabeth Rogers, instructor of Profession Office Systems Technology, recognized Stephanie (Hope) Carter, Rupert, as the outstanding POST student; Donna Vance, Union, medical assisting; Laurie Geisler, Rainelle, medical billing and coding and Melissa Boggs, Union, and Karen Surgeon, Lewisburg, medical transcriptionist program. Dr. Perkins also honored faculty and staff for their support of the over 1,000 students at GCCC. He noted that the full time faculty only numbered six, but that some 55 adjunct faculty complimented the outstanding work of the full time faculty.
To honor the contributions of the adjunct faculty, Dr. Perkins announced the Adjunct Faculty member of the Year as Dr. Judith Westerik, instructor of Biology. Dr. Westerik is full time professor of BioChemistry and division chairman at the WV School of Osteopathic Medicine. She is a native of New Orleans, La., and came to WVSOM and GCCC from a post graduate research fellowship in Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Perkins also presented Mike Williams with a plaque for Outstanding Service to Greenbrier Community College Center. Williams has served as assistant to the librarian since the college opened in 1969 and also serves as public relations officer, both part time positions. He is full time instructor of Journalism and Social Science at Greenbrier East High School.

Completing its 34th year as the only undergraduate institution of higher education in the Greenbrier Valley, Greenbrier Community College Center serves the Pocahontas, Summers, Monroe, Greenbrier, eastern Fayette, southern and eastern Nicholas counties and the neighboring Alleghany Highlands of Virginia as one of four campuses for Bluefield State College.
