Emerging Scholars Offers
Free College Credits, Tutoring

Students attending any of the four campuses of Bluefield State College, including Greenbrier Community College, this fall for the first time to participate in the Emerging Scholars Program (ESP). Unique to Bluefield State College and Greenbrier Community College Center, the program offers any new incoming student the opportunity to try college for free--free tuition, fees and books, skilled workshops, and recreational/social activities, plus six hours of college credit for those who complete the program.

Offered at GCCC, as well as the other three campuses, the ESP program offers courses in Introduction to Computers and Life Management Skills as well as workshops in math, English and reading. "Eighty per cent of last year's participants who enrolled in college at Bluefield stayed enrolled," notes Dr. David Perkins, director of GCCC and assistant provost for Bluefield State College. "With the skills classes and the workshops covering note taking, decision making, library skills, career exploration, financial aid and test anxiety, the program fills a great assistance for the incoming first time students."

"It does not matter what age," Michael Palm, director of student services at GCCC, adds. "The program is designed to help the student who is fresh out of high school or the adult who has just decided to go to college." .The ESP will begin at GCCC June 23 and runs through Aug. 1 with no classes on July 4th. The program meets Monday through Thursday 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Enrollment is limited and all applications must be in by June 13. Orientation will be held during the first week and participants will receive free placement testing and tutors and advisers will be available for academic support.

GCCC serves the Monroe, Pocahontas, Summers, Greenbrier, eastern Fayette, southern and eastern Nicholas counties, WV and the neighboring Alleghany and Bath counties, Virginia, including the cities of Covington and Clifton Forge.

For further information on the ESP, telephone 647-6560 or write or visit GCCC at 101 Church St., Lewisburg, 24901. The offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
