Lizabeth Rogers Honored by State Community College Group

An assistant professor of Professional Office Systems Technology and Business at the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College was honored this past week by the West Virginia Community College Association for her outstanding contributions to the community college.

Lizabeth Lobban Rogers was award the Outstanding Contributor Award during the WVCCA annual fall conference held at Canaan Valley. The Alderson resident is the daughter of retired Judge and Mrs. Charles Lobban of Alderson and she and her husband, Jeffrey, are the parents of four children.

At the GVCNRCTC, Rogers provides "exemplary instruction as an assistant professor teaching POST, elementary education, business, and computer application courses," noted Dr. David Perkins, provost of NRCTC of the honoree.

Working part time at the then Greenbrier Community College Center of Bluefield State College since 1988, she began her full time work at the former GCCC in 1999 to begin to build the program both in number of students and quality of course offerings.

Her current duties at the GVCNRCTC include serving on the accreditation steering committee as NRCTC seeks independent accreditation; coordinates and acts as technical spokesperson for all "office skills" programs of study: Professional Office Systems Technology, Medical Assisting, Legal Assisting, Technical Office Proficiency and Skills and Health Billing and Coding. Furthermore, she coordinates the GVC Early Entrance (Dual Credit Enrollment) Program.

As part of the outreach of NRCTC, Mrs. Rogers has coordinated or developed continuing education certificate programs of study in Medical Office Assisting, Legal Office Assisting, Medical Transcriptionist, Medical/Dental Front Office Specialist, and Business Computer Operations. She has taught courses for the Center for Workforce and Business Development, Emerging Scholars, Veterans Upward Bound, and the Federal Prison Camp at Alderson.

Her volunteer work includes teaching introductory to computer classes for the Shepherd's Center of the Greenbrier Valley.

Academically, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Education (comprehensive) from West Virginia University Institute of Technology, Master of Arts in Reading Education from WV Graduate College and Master of Arts in Business Education from Marshall University. She is currently working on a Ph.D. in Business Administration while working full time at the GVCNRCTC.

Having earned listings in Who's Who Among Teachers in America's Colleges and Universities and Who's Who Among Teachers in America's High Schools (while teaching at Greenbrier West High School prior to joining the GVC full time, she is a member of the National Business Education Association, Southern Business Education Association, WV Business Education Association, WV Access Center for Higher Education and the Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Prior to joining the GVCNRCTC faculty full time, she taught at Gauley Bridge High School, Adult Vocational Education in Raleigh County, Adult Basic Education and JOBS in Greenbrier County, Greenbrier West High School and Eastern Greenbrier Junior High School.

During the Spring, 2004, Semester, Mrs. Rogers will be teaching Keyboarding/Document Processing II, Office Accounting, Machine Transcription, and Career and Professional Development.

As the 2003 honoree at the state fall conference of the WVCCA, Mrs. Rogers represented all of the campuses of NRCTC including the Bluefield State, Beckley/Raleigh County, Nicholas County and Greenbrier Valley campuses.

At the conference, she presented a workshop on Word Processing Shortcuts while Carolyn Browning of the Bluefield campus conducted a workshop on Customer Service.

Dr. David Perkins, provost of NRCTC, serves on the board of directors of NRCTC while Roger Griffith, director of the GVCNRCTC is currently secretary of the organization.
