The Bluefield State College Lady Blues basketball team opens its 2003-04 season at home Saturday night, entertaining the Bennett (NC) Belles. The contest begins at 6 p.m. at the Ned Shott Gymnasium on the BSC campus.
BSC welcomes several returning letter-winners from last year's 2-26 club. Guard Brandi Coleman is back after averaging 12.1 points per game in 2002-03. Coleman, a junior from Iaeger, hit 40.5% of her three-point attempts. Former Princeton High standout Meagan Repass also returns on the heels of an 11.1 scoring average last year. Amy Brewer, a 5-10 senior who also averaged 11 points per game a year ago, is one of a handful of players sidelined with injury. Brewer is expected to be red-shirted this season.
Bennett, a United Methodist College with a 600 student enrollment, enters the season with an inside game built around the post play of 6-3 junior Stacy Ingram and 5-9 senior Christina Johnson.
Following Saturday's game, Gary Brown's Lady Blues will travel to Winston-Salem State on November 21-22 to participate in a four team thornament, then will return home to host the annual Herbert Sims Memorial Tournament. This year's Sims tourney field also includes Carson Newman, UVA at Wise, and Southern Virginia University.
