msmith.jpg - 97638 Bytes (BLUEFIELD)--Dr. Michael W. Smith, an Associate Professor of English at Bluefield State College, was a featured author at the annual North Cross High School Book Fair in Roanoke, VA. Smith discussed his regional best-selling books, Fishing the Roanoke Valley and Fishing the New River. The book fair raised funds for the high school and provided an opportunity for authors to interact with North Cross students.

"During my presentation, I read a poem, "The Fish," by Elizabeth Bishop. It expressed the type of excitement and exhiliration I experienced when I caught my first fish, an event that launched my lifelong love of fishing," Smith explained. Following a slide presentation that highlighted material in Fishing the New River, the BSC faculty member answered students' questions and participated in a book signing. Smith is the proprietor of Greasy Creek Outfitters, a fishing guide service and retailer in Floyd, VA.

"I shared the podium at North Cross with Forest Presnell, who hosts the "Outdoor Sportsman" television show on the Sportsman Network," Smith added. "He encouraged students to become involved in fishing because it is such a healthy, positive experience."

Smith has begun work on a sequel, Fishing the Shenandoah Valley, set for publication in the next 12-18 months. His fishing trilogy has been commissioned by the University of Virginia Press.
