Minority Issue Hearing

(BLUEFIELD)--Bluefield State College President Dr. Albert Walker appeared before the West Virginia Legislative Select Committee on Minority Issues during the October Legislative Interim session in Charleston. The BSC President was among five guest speakers who addressed the Select Committee, which is considering employment and economic development opportunities and needs among West Virginia's minority population. Also appearing before the Select Committee were Ms. Ramona Taylor Williams from REDEEM, Ms. Marsha Hopkins (WV Minority Business Development Center), Ms. Tommie Brown (WV Development Office), and Mr. Anthony Eates (WV Equal Employment Opportunity Office. Walker encouraged the Select Committee to consider investing in people and utilize the Budget Digest to address pressing needs, coordinate the work of service and health agencies to ensure that deserving individuals get assistance, decentralize control so that the local churches and schools have a significant role in the process, and gather more comprehensive information on the state's population. "John F. Kennedy once observed that the values of a society are based in large measure on the value it places in education," Walker said. "If the keys to real estate are ‘location, location, location,' the keys to economic development in West Virginia are ‘education, education, education.'" He encouraged the committee to consider steps to ensure that diversity exists in the decision-making process. The October Select Committee meeting marked the second time Walker has accepted the group's invitation to address minority issues.
