(BLUEFIELD)--A Labor Day picnic at Camp Creek State Park provided the venue for nearly 50 international students from Concord College and Bluefield State College to interact and share the holiday. The activity involved both colleges' multicultural affairs offices and provided another opportunity for the Mercer County institutions of higher education to collaborate.
"The picnic was started at Concord six years ago as a way for new international students to meet and socialize," noted Nancy Ellison, Concord's Director of Multicultural Affairs. "This year, we invited Bluefield State College to join us, and the students from both colleges really enjoyed the occasion."
"International students can feel somewhat isolated," observed Dr. Raphael Heaggans, BSC's Director of Multicultural Affairs. "The picnic addressed their feelings of isolation and could mark the beginning of some lasting relationships among the students. Several exchanged contact information. Certainly, it enhanced the sense of community for them."
Students took advantage of recreational opportunities at Camp Creek, according to Ellison, playing sports, swimming, and hiking to the state park's waterfalls.
