"Save a Life Tour" to Visit BSC

(BLUEFIELD)--With an emphasis upon educating students about the devastating effects of drinking and driving, a "drunk driving simulator" will visit Bluefield State College on October 13. The cost of bringing the simulator to the Bluefield campus of BSC is being underwritten by a $500 check from the Bluefield Police Department, along with support from Princeton Community Hospital and Andy Clark Ford.

The simulator will be on campus from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on October 13 to give students a "first hand experience" of the dangers associated with driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Representing the Bluefield Police Department, Detective Jon Jones presented a $500 check to BSC President Dr. Albert Walker during a brief ceremony in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center earlier this week. Jones noted that the funds came from the Governor's Highway Safety Grant program. He and Joan Buchanan, BSC Student Activities Coordinator worked for several months to apply for the grant.

"Binge drinking has become one of the biggest problems on college campuses," Buchanan said. "We believe this demonstration takes place at an ideal time, with homecoming, proms, and the holiday season approaching."

Walker echoed those sentiments. "If what we do here prevents one student from being killed in an alcohol-related accident, our efforts have been worthwhile.
