Two faculty members and 94 graduates were honored Friday (May 7) at the annual awards banquet for the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College held in the Underwood Youth Building at the State Fair grounds in Fairlea. Sponsored by Student Government Association, the dinner/dance serves as an end of the year social as well as the formal awards program for the college.
Judy Stennett, instructor of English, was named full time faculty member of the year by the SGA, honoring her for not only her academic endeavors but also her work with the student publication, The Saga, and with the SGA.
Selected as the Adjunct Faculty member of the year was Dr. Honno Kirk, instructor of Psychology.
In special recognition, Roger Griffith, director of GVCNRCTC, paid tribute to retiring Associate Professor Leila Kennedy of the business department and Valedictorian of Bluefield State College's Class of 2004, Gail Greenway of Alderson who completed most of her course work at the GVCNRCTC.
Also honored was Michael Hanna of Asbury, another BSC student who has completed most of his class work at GVCNRCTC, who was the student representative on the BSC Board of Governors for 2003-04.
New SGA officers were also introduced during the program as President John Massie of Lewisburg; Vice President Michael Welch of Rainelle; Secretary Heather Nutter of Quinwood; Treasurer Bridgette Smith of Union; Parliamentarian Curtis Mann of Renick; Representatives Solomon Simmons of Fairlea; Tara Garcia, Forest Hill; Marilyn Kittle of Sinks Grove; Rosemary Winston of Lewisburg and Jennifer Blevins of Crawley.
Phi Eta Kappa, the national two year college honor society honored Pam Renick of Williamsburg, recently named to the All American Academic Team sponsored by USA Todayand the college boards of the various states.
Tutors were also honored by Wanda Johnson of the Student Support Services office with special awards and the SGA honored Pam Cochran of White Sulphur Springs for service as vice president and the most valuable player award went to Terry South of Union for her leadership, service and concern for the student body.
