Courses of Study at NRCTC Accredited by North Central Association

"All classes and courses of study at New River Community and Technical College are accredited by the regional accrediting agency, the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities, and will continue to be fully accredited while the college seeks independent accreditation," says Dr. David Perkins, president of New River Community and Technical College.

The Bill which created NRCTC in 2003 gave West Virginia's newest state college until Dec. 31, 2004, to become independently accredited, but, as President Perkins points out, "Senate Bill 448 sets that deadline as June 30, 2005, and allows the Council for Community and Technical College Education to extend the deadline even further if it deems the college is making satisfactory progress toward accreditation.".

Work has already begun on the New River campuses at Bluefield State College, Bluefield; Beckley/Raleigh County campus, Beckley; Nicholas County Campus, Summersville; and the Greenbrier Valley Campus, Lewisburg, towards reaching the independent accreditation by the deadlines.

President Perkins, Michael Palm, director of student services for NRCTC, and Kenneth Baker, assistant to the NRCTC President for special projects, attended the 109th meeting of the Higher Education Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities in Chicago last week. They were accompanied by Dr. Felica Blanks, Dr. Melinda Maher, and Libby Belcher of Bluefield State College, all part of the accreditation effort leadership team.

In addition to the general workshops, the NRCTC delegates attended the special eligibility workshops for non-affiliated institutions including workshops on "Making A Difference With the New Criteria;" "Introduction to the Eligibility Requirements;" "How To Organize for Eligibility;" and "Fitting the Pieces Together."

Traveling to Chicago via Amtrak, the NRCTC delegation chose that form of transportation to show support for the Cardinal Amtrak route which serves Greenbrier, Monroe, Summers, Raleigh and Fayette counties, five of the nine counties served directly by the NRCTC.

"This method of travel also gave our delegation plenty of time to plan our participation in the Higher Learning Commission conference and on the return trip, we were able to plan our strategies towards reaching the independent accreditation as quickly as possible," President Perkins concluded.

New River Community and Technical College will become administratively independent as of July 1 under Senate Bill 448. Its work will be coordinated by the Council for Community and Technical College Education to serve Mercer, Monroe, Summers, Raleigh, Fayette, Greenbrier, Nicholas, Pocahontas, and Webster counties and neighboring areas from its four campuses in Bluefield, Beckley, Lewisburg and Summersville.
