(Bluefield)-The Bluefield State College American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Club collected five first place finishes in the Virginias' Regional ASCE Student Competition recently. The BSC team earned top rank overall in the Steel Bridge and Concrete Frisbee competition. By winning the Steep Bridge event, the BSC Student Club earned a berth at the ASCE national championship in Golden Colorado, May 28-29.
The BSC contingent outdistanced student teams from West Virginia University, Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, VMI, Old Dominion University, WVU Institute of Technology, George Washington University, and Howard University among other institutions of higher education. The BSC student team finished first in the following categoriesSteel Bridge (Overall), Steel Bridge Economy, Steel Bridge Speed of Construction, Concrete Frisbee (Overall), and Concrete Frisbee Accuracy. Additionally, the BSC team chalked up second place finishes in two categories and a third place finish in another category.
Kerry Stauffer, BSC Assistant Professor/Civil Engineering Technology, and club advisor) noted, The regional competition gives our students an opportunity to compete against other institutions and, at the same, time begin a professional contact network that will be invaluable to their careers.
In the Steel Bridge competition, students have to construct the bridge, consider factors like cost, weight, speed of construction, construction needs, and labor requirements. This provides a much greater depth of understanding for real world design, according to Stauffer. This competition provides an opportunity for our students to take theoretical ideas and principles, applying them to a real design challenge. Stauffer praised the work of the students involved in the competition. When our students perform this well against major institutions that have far greater resources, it substantiates the quality of our program at Bluefield State College, he concluded.
