McNair Scholar Presents at Research Symposium

(Bluefield)-Dana Cochran, a graduating senior at Bluefield State College, joined eight fellow McNair Scholars to present at the 13th Biannual Concord College McNair Scholars Symposium April 13-14, 2004. Under the guidance of her McNair Mentor Dr. Michael Smith, Associate Professor of English at Bluefield State College, Dana conducted research on Harlem Renaissance Poet and Bramwell native Anne Spencer. Over the course of her research, Dana investigated Spencers writings and biographical information in relation to Modernism. As a McNair Scholar, she also completed a Summer Research Internship that included a variety of activities designed to prepare her for doctoral study including graduate school visits, cultural enrichment activities, and research-oriented seminars. Following graduation in May 2004, Dana plans to pursue her Ph.D. in literature and eventually teach at the college level. The McNair Scholars Program is a federally funded TRIO Program designed to prepare first-generation low income and underrepresented college students for graduate school. McNair Scholars earn a $2,800 research stipend, receive hands-on research experience and assistance with the graduate school application process, visit graduate schools, and present their research at professional conferences. The Concord College McNair Scholars Program recruits students at Bluefield State College, Concord College, and West Virginia State College.
