Takes Part in International Studies Conference
in Washington, DC

bourne.jpg - 18783 Bytes(Bluefield) - Dr. Steve Bourne, Professor of Business at Bluefield State College, was one of 12 college faculty members to participate in the recent John A. Maxwell Scholar-Diplomat Program on Transatlantic Relations with an Evolving Europe. The three-day program in Washington, DC was sponsored by the West Virginia Consortium for Faculty and Course Development in International Studies (FACDIS). The initiative was designed to help participating faculty internationalize curriculum in their classes.

One of the most impressive aspects of the experience involved the small group settings during which we could interact with representatives of foreign embassies, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, State Department officials, and members of the Council on Foreign Relations, Dr. Bourne said.

FACDIS was established 24 years ago as a consortium of West Virginia colleges and universities with more than 375 participating faculty in international studies and foreign languages from more than 15 different disciplines. The consortium seeks to assist in the revision and enrichment of international studies, helping faculty remain abreast of new knowledge and innovative teaching methods in their fields. Featured speakers at the Transatlantic Relations program included John Van Oudenaren, Chief of the European Division/Library of Congress, Catherine Novelli, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Europe and the Mediterranean, and Charles A. Kupchan, Senior Fellow and Director of Europe Studies/Council on Foreign Relations.

The program was very helpful, Bourne noted, because I can bring back to the classroom the perspective developed through the experience. Much of what was discussed can be utilized in my International Management and Business Policy & Strategy classes.
