BSC Archivist Participates in
Two “Advanced Archives Institutes”

Turnbull Peggy.jpg.jpg - 12691 Bytes(Bluefield)—The 2004 “Advanced Archives Institutes” imparted some valuable training for Bluefield State College archivist Peggy Turnbull. After attending two recent Institutes, Turnbull drafted an Institutional “records management policy” and began conducting a College records inventory. The 2004 Historically Black Colleges and Universities Advanced Archives Institutes were sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and Spelman College.

The sessions were held at the Georgia State Archives, with instructors from Cornell University, the National Archives and Records Administration, Long Island University, New York State Archives, and the Georgia State Archives. More than 40 librarians and archivists attended the 2004 sessions, building upon the knowledge base they had established through attending previous Archives Institute classes in 2001, 2002, and 2003.

“The 2004 Institutes involved more ‘hands on’ training,” Turnbull noted. “Spelman College and Atlanta University/Morehouse brought collections from their archives for institute attendees to arrange and describe.” Additionally, the Institute included sessions on designing an archives building and digitization of records. “Four of the instructors at the Institute are now Distinguished Fellows in the Society of American Archivists,” Turnbull added. “They comprised an incredibly gifted and committed faculty.”

During the past eight years, the size of the Bluefield State College Archives’ collection has doubled, and the College’s holdings are accessible through the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections. Individuals with BSC records, documents, or artifacts that are, or may be, historically significant are encouraged to contact the BSC archivist via e-mail (pturnbull@bluefieldstate.edu)
