First Black History Month Convocation Set Feb. 5 AT GVCNRCTC

The first of a series of special Black History Month programs at the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College will be Thursday, Feb. 5, in the Student Activities Center of Greenbrier Hall, the main office and classroom building for the Greenbrier Valley's only undergraduate institution of higher education.

Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a well known African American historian, will be portrayed by Norman Jordan in the 2:45 p.m. program which is open to the public and is free. A luncheon will be provided by the Lewisburg United Methodist Church.

Born in Ansted (Fayette County) WV, Jordan's family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he attended the public schools and served four years in the US Navy.

He returned to Ansted in 1977 and enrolled at West Virginia University where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre and two years later, he earned a Master of Arts in African American Studies at Ohio State University.

A published poet and playwright, his poetry has been anthologized in 38 books of poetry, the most recent being Make A Joyful Sound: Poems for Children by African American Poets, In Search of Color Everywhere: A Collection of African American Poetry and Wild Sweet Notes: Fifty Years of WV Poetry 1950-1999.

The director of the WV African American Arts and Heritage Academy and the African American Heritage Family Tree Museum, his plays have been staged in San Diego, Cleveland, Texas, Atlanta and New York and he hold the United Nations Playwright Award and was the first recipient of the Harriet Eells Performing Arts Fellowship at the famous Karamu House Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio.

In January, 2000, Jordan received a "Martin Luther King: Living the Dream Award" from the Governor's Awards Committee.

The program of Jordan portraying the great African American Historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson is being shared by the Nicholas County Campus of NRCTC where Jordan will appear Feb. 3 and the Greenbrier Valley Campus for his Feb. 5 performance.

New River Community and Technical College serves 16 counties in central and southeastern WV and neighboring Virginia through its Nicholas County Campus at US 19 and Webster Road, Summersville; the Beckley/Raleigh County Campus in the Harper Road Industrial Park, Beckley; the Bluefield State College campus in Bluefield and the Greenbrier Valley Campus in Lewisburg.

"We hope everyone in the Greenbrier Valley and the Alleghany Highlands will be joining us for this special program," says Wanda Johnson, program coordinator for Multi Cultural activities and student services at the GVCNRCTC.
