Students Visit Corporate Offices
of Three Regional Employers

(BLUEFIELD)--In less than two days, eight Bluefield State College School of Business students visited the corporate offices of three regional employers, met administrators, and enhanced their understanding of the opportunities that await them upon graduation. The trip, December 15-16, was arranged by Dr. Debbie Halsey-Hunter, Dean/School of Business, at BSC.

At the corporate offices of BB&T in Winston-Salem, NC, students toured the facility and learned about the educational preparation and skills sought by BB&T recruiters. "The students really enjoyed the experience, particularly because many want to remain in this region, and BB&T has several facilities in our immediate area," Halsey-Hunter said.

A tour of the TIAA-CREF headquarters in Charlotte permitted students to meet call representatives who field a variety of questions from individuals whose investment/financial portfolios are coordinated through the organization. "TIAA-CREF call representatives are very well-paid and all hold at least a four-year business degree, with some holding MBAs," the BSC Dean added. Corporate representatives discussed economic and financial investment trends, along with career options, with the students.

A trip to Duke Power Company wrapped up the students' trip. "We heard about the type of graduates Duke Power seeks and how they recruit employees," Halsey-Hunter stated. "They discussed the opportunities for vertical mobility within the organization, as well."

"Interestingly, most employees at all three organizations were 'long-timers,' having worked for the same company for several years," she concluded. "There was significant opportunity for advancement within each company."

A similar trip is being planned for School of Business students later in the semester.
