Dr. Raphael Heaggans,
BSC Director of Multicultural Affairs,
to be a Featured Speaker at Wakefield High School

RHeaggans.jpg - 29223 Bytes (BLUEFIELD)--Dr. Raphael Heaggans, Director of Multicultural Affairs at Bluefield State College, has accepted an invitation to speak at Wakefield (Arlington, VA) High School later this month. His topic will be "I Celebrate Diversity--Multicultural Education and Kicking the Habit of Prejudice." The program for the school's students and employees, as well as the community, will take place on January 29, beginning at 3:15 p.m. at Wakefield High.

Dr. Heaggans will also present the program "Race and Racism: The Politics of Images and Music in the Hip Hop Genre" to a Wakefield High School student audience on January 30 at 11:30 a.m.

He serves on the Editorial Board and Research Consortium of "Africalogical Perspectives," a national publication designed to create and enhance awareness of new scholarship by and about African-Americans. Dr. Heaggans has also submitted an article that has been accepted for publication in the initial edition of the magazine. His article, "Pedagogical Viewpoints on Multicultural Education: Three Teachers' Definition of Diversifying Curriculum", details results of his research and observations he made during a study of a selected middle school, with the goal of determining how a "teaching for tolerance" initiative mirrors the goals of Multicultural Education.
