Battle of Lewisburg Group Seeks Volunteers for May Reenactment

Volunteers to assist with the Battle of Lewisburg Reenactment and Living History program scheduled for May 22-23 on the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College are being sought by the organizing committee.

"Any reenacters are welcome to join our expanded numbers this year and may contact Stephen Cassle at 304-768-4807," announces Darlene Fife, chairman of the Battle of Lewisburg Reenactment and Living History committee. She also said that Cassle can be reached via e mail at stonewall2ndcorps@msn.com

"We welcome reenacters for either the Union or the Confederate armies," she added, noting that the GVCNRCTC offers great areas for the camp, the camp dances, ample paved parking and the Hollowell Auditorium for the living history programs on the first floor of Greenbrier Hall, the main office and classroom building which is handicap accessible.

However, the organizing committee also needs all kinds of volunteers to help carry off the well planned weekend of history.

"Anyone who can help us with the living history programs, with the camp dance, meals, any number of activities planned between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday and after church through the afternoon on Sunday should contact us as soon as possible," Fife notes.

Fife, the owner of Plants Etc. on Jefferson Street in Lewisburg, can be reached at her business during business hours by telephoning 304-645-6910 or e mail dfife@citynet.net or potential volunteers can contact Angela Beavers at 304-438-7278.

The highlight on Sunday afternoon, May 23, will be the reenactment of a funeral cortege for an officer killed in the battle.

Always concluding the special weekend activities is a memorial service at the Lewisburg Confederate Cemetery which is located adjoining the GVCNRCTC and within easy walking distance.
