GVCNRCTC Student Solos in Aviation Program

A James Monroe High School graduate who is a full time student at the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College recently soloed as part of his studies in the aviation program offered by the College in partnership with SRO Inc. at the Greenbrier Valley Airport.

Michael A. Walls, a general education major at GVCNRCTC, was congratulated by Ed Sweptson, instructor of pilot's ground school, during the first class after completing his solo flight.

A native of Roseville, Mi., Walls grew up in Bozoo in southern Monroe County and resides in Lewisburg with his wife, Amanda, a student at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Before transferring to GVCNRCTC, Walls attended Concord College and was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma.

With Sweptson as his ground instructor, Walls had Jerry O'Sullivan, instructor of aviation at GVCNRCTC, as his flight instructor.

Walls plans to take his private pilots testing soon.

Courses being offered in the GVCNRCTC Aviation program this semester include Introduction to Aviation and Aerospace, Introduction to Aviation and Aerospace Field Experience, Private Pilot Theory, Aviation Math, Navigation and Comps, Instrument Pilot Theory, Human Factors in Aviation Practice, Fundamentals of Instruction, and Commercial Pilot Sel Theory.
