National Youth Sports Program Summer Camp
Begins Sixth Year at BSC, June 14

(Bluefield)—The National Youth Sports Program summer camp for area youth, ages 10-16, begins its sixth season at Bluefield State College on June 14. Registration will be conducted, June 14-19, beginning at 8 a.m. each day in the Ned Shott Gymnasium on BSC’s Bluefield campus. The program is offered free of charge to participants, providing youth with instruction in swimming, team sports, math and science, and drug/alcohol education.

Physical examinations for program participants will be offered on May 27 and June 1, 2:30-4 p.m., in the Student Health Center/Ned Shott Gymnasium. McDowell County participants can receive a physical at the Tug River Health Association in Gary (304-448-2101) or Northfork (304-862-2588) after calling for an appointment.

Parents’ orientation for camp participants will be held on Saturday, June 12, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Ned Shott Gymnsium at BSC. Applications are available at local schools and at Bluefield State College (Harris-Jefferson Student Center, room 205). Prospective participants can also receive applications through the mail by calling either 304-327-4430 or 304-327-4187.

“NYSP offers disadvantaged youth the opportunity to receive benefits from structured sports and enrichment programs,” noted BSC NYSP Program Director Roy Grimes. NYSP is a partnership enterprise that brings together the federal government, represented by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the nation’s colleges and universities acting through the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

BSC donates the services of a project administrator and selects qualified staff to conduct project activities. The project is divided into enrichment and activity programs.
