(Bluefield)—Two local college faculty members earned widespread recognition when their scholarly paper received the “Best Paper” award at an international educators’ conference in Las Vegas earlier this month. Dr. Elaine Scott, Visiting Associate Professor of Business/Bluefield State College, and D. Bruce. Sneidman, Associate Professor of Professional Office Systems Technology/New River Community & Technical College, collaborated to produce the award winning paper, entitled “Analysis of Student Satisfaction with Bluefield State College.”
Their paper was based upon the results obtained during an August 2004 survey of Bluefield State College students. It was designed to delineate the impact of satisfaction with various aspects of college life with students’ academic progress and success. “We wanted an answer to the question, ‘Are our students satisfied or dissatisfied with their experience?’” Scott explained. “We found that overall satisfaction with their experience at Bluefield State College was very high. Seventy-nine percent of those surveyed indicated they were either satisfied or very satisfied, and only six percent indicated they were unsatisfied or very unsatisfied.” Students were also very satisfied with their instructors, class schedules, core/major courses, and were least satisfied with the availability of convenient parking at the College.
“The surveys were administered to students in our classes,” added Professor Sneidman. “We were able to get responses from students in all majors. However, business majors represented the bulk of the respondents. Students’ participation in this exercise augmented their understanding of marketing research, marketing principles, and the economic principle of ‘supply and demand.”
Their peers at the “2004 International Business & Economic Research Conference” and “2004 College Teaching & Learning Conference” selected the submission of Scott and Sneidman to receive the “Best Paper” award. The week long concurrent conferences has 57 sessions each with four to six papers attracting professional educators from every state in the United States, and from 27 foreign countries.
