The students, members of the College’s “Emerging Leaders Institute” (ELI) and “Honors College,” considered Jensen’s “Thirty Keys to Leadership.” “Have a bias for action,” he advised. “Get a purpose that is bigger than yourself.” He encouraged students to identify their individual strengths and goals, then consider how they would define success and failure. Finally, he talked about the habits of success and challenged the BSC students to lead and serve this year.
The program was a component of the ELI curriculum at BSC. It also marked the first time that ELI and the Honors College had been brought together in an educational/skills enhancement initiative. “This was the first of several programs involving students from both groups,” noted Dr. Felica Blanks, Director of the Title III program that underwrote the program, and Executive Director of Institutional Development and Advancement at BSC. “Our goal is to enhance the leadership abilities of these students so that they can teach leadership principles and concepts to other students.”
