Tom Joyner Foundation/Nationwide Insurance Summer Internship

Rausch2.JPG - 71221 Bytes(Bluefield)—When Bluefield State College student Nancy Rausch first learned of the Tom Joyner Foundation/Nationwide Insurance summer internship program, she hesitated before applying. Encouraged to do so by her her mother, Lisa Fenton (who is also a student in the BSC School of Business) and with a letter of recommendation from BSC visiting instructor of Business Susan Mann, she submitted the required application in late February. Early this month, she learned she had been selected to participate in the prestigious 10-week program at Nationwide’s worldwide headquarters in Columbus, OH. “Right now, I’m somewhat awestruck and excited,” Rausch, a Princeton resident, noted. “I can’t wait to learn, and the opportunity to work for a Fortune 500 company will be an invaluable experience.” Rausch obtained two letters of recommendation, completed a 500-word essay, provided support material, and took part in a phone interview with Nationwide Insurance’s “On your Side” internship program coordinator before learning on April 11 that she had been selected.

“I have a five-year old daughter (Brenna), and I hesitated before applying for the internship,” Rausch explained. “My mother told me she would watch my daughter, and she encouraged me to apply.” With a career focus in marketing and management, Rausch’s experience this summer will be a “living laboratory” for continued learning. “I’ll be learning in a setting beyond the classroom,” she said. “By being in the internship, I can also apply for a $2500 scholarship that will be awarded to students selected from the program.”

Mann has both Rausch and Fenton among her students. “There’s a wonderful dynamic they share as a mother and daughter in the classroom,” the BSC marketing instructor explained. “They are competitive, committed to excellence, and they have a true love for learning.”

The Nationwide “On Your Side” Internship Program selects one student from each of the Tom Joyner Foundation’s 2005 featured institutions. Successful candidates must be rising college juniors or seniors, possess a grade point average of at least 3.0, and major in a business/business related or computer science field. Bluefield State College has been selected as the Foundation’s Historically Black College of the Month for May, 2005, during which the Foundation will utilize its multimedia reach to help raise funds to support BSC students who may not otherwise be able to continue their education because of financial challenges.

Rausch expressed special appreciation for the support of her instructors. “The faculty at Bluefield State College are personable and approachable. They want you to succeed while you are here and after you graduate.” Her internship begins on June 6.
