BSC Student Government Association Banquet Recognizes Individuals & Organizations of Excellence

(Bluefield)—More than a dozen campus organizations, students, faculty, and staff were selected for special recognition during the recent Bluefield State College Student Government Association (SGA) student awards banquet at the Bluefield Elks Club. The event annually salutes excellence in service, volunteerism, and academic/community endeavors. Awards were presented by Student Life and the SGA during the program.

The “Criminal Justice Club” was named the Student Organization of the Year, following an academic year in which club members won the homecoming float competition and conducted numerous fund-raising activities for philanthropic causes. The BSC chapter of Phi Sigma Phi fraternity was selected as the “Greek Organization of the Year” after launching several campus and community support projects over the past two semesters.

Dr. Pat Mulvey, faculty advisor for Pi Gamma Mu (the national honor society for the social sciences) and Newman’s Club (a new multifaith student organization) was honored as the “Student Organization Advisor of the Year,” and Beth Hash, advisor to the recently established BSC chapter of Delta Chi Omega sorority, was named the “Kelly J. Dinger Greek Organization Advisor of the Year.”

BSC student Erica Simpkins won the “William Jackson Award.” She is a member of SGA, and served on the Program Board and Homecoming committees. Jamie Styons, a BSC student active in student publications, the Program Board, and president of Phi Sigma Phi and the Greek Council, was honored as the “Greek of the Year.” BSC grad Beth Henry was presented the “Greek Alumni of the Year” award.

SGA awards included: Bruce Mutter (Advisor of the Year), Sharon Evans (Instructor of the Year), Gary Durham (Adjunct Faculty of the Year), Jane Richardson (Classified Staff of the Year) and Rita Hill (Lifetime Achievement Award). Heather Simmons was named the “Flame Award” recipient, in recognition of her support for students and student initiatives.
