NRCTC Honary Inducts 38 in Sunday Ceremony

Thirty seven students and one honorary member were inducted into the Beta Zeta Delta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, academic honorary for two year colleges, Sunday (April 3) in a special ceremony held in Hollowell Auditorium on the first floor of Greenbrier Hall on the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College.

Marilyn Kiddle of Hinton, chapter president, welcomed the new inductees and the near capacity audience attending the ceremony with Dr. Lucie T. Refsland of Lewisburg, professor of mathematics and advisor to the Chapter along with Mr. Michael Palm, dean of student services for NRCTC, gave the history of the honorary which is closely aligned with the four year college honorary, Phi Beta Kappa.

In pointing out that chapter was originally charter in 1997 for what is now the Greenbrier Valley Campus, Dr. Refsland announced that, “With this induction, this chapter now represents the entire New River Community and Technical College, and its four campuses.

Guest speaker for the event was Dr. David Perkins of Lewisburg, retired president of NRCTC who spoke on the values of the Phi Theta Kappa--service, fellowship, scholarship, and leadership using a “What’s it all about?” theme. Dr. Perkins point out that it is all about purpose, about other people, about building positive, rewarding friendships, about continuous learning and growth and “using all these to make something happen.” Following Dr. Perkins’ address, Dr. Refsland announced that the Chapter had received an monetary award for increase in membership. She then presented the Chapter President Marilyn Kiddle with the monetary scholarship to go towards her trip to represent WV as the New Century Scholar for 2005 in Boston, Ma., later this month.

A reception followed in the Student Activities Center of the Greenbrier Valley Campus.
