BSC Professor to be a Featured Presenter
at Jacksonville, Florida Conference

Dr Alma Bennett (Bluefield)— Dr. Alma Bennett, Assistant Professor of Speech at Bluefield State College, has accepted an invitation from the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association to present a paper at the PCA/ACA regional conference in Jacksonville, FL in October.

Her paper focuses upon the lives of Stark Young and Maxwell Anderson, early 20th playwrights and critics. “Most critics of the early 20th century viewed theatre from a perspective of realism,” Bennett explained. “Young and Anderson proposed theories of theatre that were more philosophical and aesthetic. They didn’t neglect the social commentary of the age, but they strongly believed that theatre should transcend the problems of the age.”

Bennett attended her first PCA conference as a graduate student. She is a past chair of PCA’s theater and drama committee, organizing panel discussions at several conferences.

PCA (founded during the American Studies movement in the late 1960s) and the American Culture Association, focus upon popular arts and architecture. The emphasis is not simply American and/or contemporary. The conference in Jacksonville is expected to attract more than 200 attendees and presenters.
